The Ministry of Health holds a special Umuganda against Malaria

The Ministry of Health on June 16 held special communal work (Umuganda) aimed at fighting Malaria in the country. Held in all villages countrywide, the Umuganda emphasized key malaria prevention messages including; environmental hygiene which includes clearing bushes around the houses and draining stagnant water which could act as anophelese mosquito breeding sites, closing windows early, sleeping under treated Long Lasting Insecticide Nets and seeking early diagnosis on experiencing possible Malaria symptoms.

As part of the special Malaria Umuganda, health minister Dr.Diane Gashumba joined Nkumba Seminary students, in Burera District to plant thousands of Artemisia mosquito repellent trees.

Rwanda has made tangible achievements in fighting Malaria; more than 4 million bed nets were distributed by March 2017 countrywide, community-based management of malaria was rolled out in October 2016 in all 30 districts of Rwanda to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of people with malaria. Meanwhile, Community Health Workers were equipped with malaria Rapid Diagnostic tests to test and treat Malaria in their respective communities.  Before, CHWs only treated children under 5 a trend that changed. Also Rwandans under Ubudehe 1 and 2 social clusters now access free malaria treatment.
